G-funk music, born out of West Coast gangsta rap in the ’90s, combines imposing bass lines, wriggling synths and other callbacks to the golden era of ’70s funk with hip-hop. It’s kickback music you can dance to — or, rather, bump-and-grind to. Based in Pasadena, Calif., XL Middleton keeps the G-funk legacy alive with deeply groovy tunes.
