'¡Viva Cuba!'

‘¡Viva Cuba!’ A new exhibit at BigTown Gallery in Rochester features historical and contemporary photographs of Cuba in a range of styles by nine featured artists, including: Susan S. Bank, Virginia Beahan, Raúl Corrales, John Fago, José A. Figueroa, Jon Gilbert Fox, Alex Harris, Alberto Korda and Janis Lewin. The earliest images are the photographs of the late Raúl Corrales, who documented Cuba’s political revolution in the 1950s, followed by images from Cuban photojournalist José A. Figueroa. Contemporary photographer Susan S. Bank captures the daily life of farming communities. And Virgina Beahan, a senior lecturer in photography at Dartmouth College, contributes contemporary landscapes capture the political geography of Cuba’s complicated relationship with the United States. BigTown hosts a panel discussion on this very topic on Saturday, May 16, at the Rochester High School Auditorium at 3 p.m.
