Torin Porter

“I see an emphasis on humanity as the unifying aspect of my work,” says the Glover-based sculptor. “Humanity, as it relates to its inventions, to nature and to itself.” With works on view in the solo show “Before Words” at Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts in Brattleboro, the artist strives to tap into the ineffable connections that can be created among an artist, artwork and viewer. Interestingly, though, a handful of these small-scale metal works are embodied plays on words, nodding to the pervasive (inescapable?) power of language. “Figure Head,” for example, features a prominent head atop five pairs of human legs.
