The Aphasia Choir of Vermont is comprised of individuals with aphasia (difficulty talking or using language) due to left hemisphere stroke or traumatic brain injury. Because music is largely mediated by the undamaged right hemispheres of the brains of people with aphasia, they can sing fluently even if they have severe difficulty speaking or are nonverbal. The Aphasia Choir of Vermont was honored to receive the American Stroke Association's Stroke Hero Award for Outstanding Group in 2020 and was also featured on the National Public Radio program "All Things Considered."
