Sin-ying Ho

Jingdezhen, in Jiangxi Province, China, is widely known as the birthplace of porcelain. For New York-based artist Sin-ying Ho, the city and its nearly two-millennia-long ceramic legacy is the catalyst for hybrid sculptures that merge ancient tradition with contemporary concerns. Now on view at Dartmouth College’s Hood Downtown in Hanover, N.H., “Past Forward” offers a selection of Ho’s sculptures. Some are remarkably similar to recognizable Chinese vessels, while others are nonfunctional, abstract amalgams of shapes and forms. Enmeshed within classic motifs are silhouettes of her own invention, comprised of contemporary symbols — currency, corporate logos, circuit boards — that gesture toward modern networks and constructions of value.
