Matika Wilbur

Project 562

At Vermont Law School, the Native American Law Students Association hosts an exhibit of photos by Matika Wilbur. The photographer and activist, based in the Pacific Northwest, is a member of the Swinomish and Tulalip tribes in Washington. She has taken photographic portraits and collected stories from each of the 562-plus federally recognized indigenous tribes in the U.S., traveling and living in an RV for years to pursue the project. The object has been, in part, to change the way Native America is viewed. “The time of sharing, building cultural bridges, abolishing racism, and honoring the legacy that this country is built upon is among us,” Wilbur writes on the project’s website. “Project 562 is that platform.”

These community event listings are sponsored by the WaterWheel Foundation, a project of the Vermont band Phish.
