Germany is widely considered the birthplace of modern forestry and sustainability. Following his 2024 visit to Germany, Vermont County Forester Robert Nelson will share observations from five distinct regions of the country and discuss what Vermont can learn from German forestry practices.
His presentation will explore how soil and land conditions affect the types of forests that grow, how forest management differs across regions, and how forestry decisions are always shaped by the people and communities connected to the land. He will also discuss how these ideas apply to forest management here in Vermont.
