Opera Vermont tosses out traditional tropes in its production of Gioachino Rossini’s La Cenerentola at Barre Opera House. Based on the timeless European folktale of Cinderella, the 19th-century dramedy sidesteps any supernatural elements to highlight the story’s more humanistic side. (Sorry, Disney fans, no pumpkin carriages or glass slippers here!) Nevertheless, magic abounds thanks to a Dr. Seuss-inspired setting. Vibrant colors, wacky costumes and high-energy staging show adults and kids alike that the art form doesn’t have to be serious or tragic to make a lasting impact.
