Julie Blackmon | Hood Downtown | Visual Art Shows | Seven Days | Vermont's Independent Voice

Julie Blackmon

With her works on view in “The Everyday Fantastic,” the Missouri-based photographer carefully constructs images within her own hometown, infusing familiar scenes of middle America with uncanniness. Opening on Friday, June 9, at the Hood Downtown in Hanover, N.H., the exhibition features selections from Blackmon’s “Homegrown” series, images of “normal” white suburbia that look eerily arrested. These works have the quality of a sci-fi scene just before things start to get really interesting — e.g., the aliens are on their way, and home will never look the same again.
