At Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater, prize-winning writer and Middlebury College alum Julia Alvarez launches her autobiographical collection, Visitations — the first book of poems published by the literary luminary in more than 20 years. Alvarez’s return to her poetic roots, hailed by Publishers Weekly as “a vivid and arresting volume,” gracefully traces the seasons of her life, from the warmth of her childhood in the Dominican Republic to the chaos of national political upheaval to the challenges of her assimilation in the U.S. Through intimate and heartfelt reflections, Alvarez illustrates how the art form can, as she puts it, “provide the necessary spark of joy to keep us going."
