Baltimore post-punk duo Ed Schrader’s Music Beat step up their pop chops on their 2018 album, Riddles — cowritten with notable experimental electronic juggernaut and fellow Baltimorean Dan Deacon, who also serves as producer. The unbridled sounds of the duo’s previous efforts are tweaked and streamlined to pop perfection, and drenched in a thick, glossy coat of ’80s sheen. Fuzzy synths and sucker-punch hooks outfit devilishly catchy tunes, with just enough experimentation to keep listeners on their toes.
