In October 2010, 5-year-old Ashley Pratt was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In response, Ashley’s mother, Lynn, founded Downhill for Diabetes, a day of skiing and snowboarding that supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Athletes in this fun-filled fundraiser collect donations, then receive discounted or free lift tickets for time on the slopes at Pico Mountain in Killington. For those with a competitive streak, a timed race is open to anyone at the mountain who makes a small contribution. In a press release, Lynn (pictured with son, Timothy, and Ashley) says, “We hope to make a difference by raising funds to help support diabetes research and, ultimately, find a cure for this disease.”
