DeQn Sue’s debut album is called Zeitgeist, a word that, in the original German, translates to “time spirit” or “spirit of the time.” She seems to imply that her sound is a manifestation of “the now.” The singer-songwriter offers a nuanced pastiche that looks to many eras of pop for inspiration. From classic jazz to Motown girl groups to ’90s R&B, she reinvents recognizable hallmarks from storied decades of recorded music and spins them into tight, fresh jams. Perhaps that’s what the now is all about: cherry-picking tropes of yesteryear, dismantling them and putting them back together in bold, refreshing ways. Catch DeQn Sue on Wednesday, September 20, at the Monkey House in Winooski. Local R&B master Guthrie Galileo opens.
