Working in the realm of fiber collage, the Long Island City artist has for years used appropriated textiles and her sewing machine to craft clever, irreverent narrative scenes. Her solo show “Of Gods & Men” at the AVA Gallery & Art Center in Lebanon,
N.H., presents a large collection of these works, which allow visitors to become acquainted with Marks as a storyteller and an artist. Many of her larger pieces make use of mass-produced tapestry reproductions of Renaissance paintings. “And She Cast a Spell to Bind Him to Her” (pictured), for example, recasts Vermeer’s “The Lacemaker” as a lonely wizardess constructing herself some company.
