Senegalese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cheikh Ibra Fam mesmerizes listeners with a musical mélange of Afro-pop, funk, jazz and soul at the Martha Pellerin & Andy Shapiro Memorial Bandstand in Middlesex. Fam’s artistic evolution traces back to his childhood in West Africa, where — at the tender age of 7 — he joined a choir performing spiritual melodies in the Baye Fall tradition. An early introduction to Afro-Cuban music on his family’s home stereo — as well as the gritty, unmistakable vocals of Otis Redding and the crooning, soulful sounds of Marvin Gaye — further defined Fam’s diverse palate, laying the foundation for his genre-defying career.
