“Nature is a haunted house,” said Emily Dickinson, “but art is a house that tries to be haunted.” This passage serves to introduce Moss’ solo exhibition, “Landscape Mysteries,” now on view at the BigTown Gallery in Rochester. Creating entirely from memory, the artist and Dartmouth College studio art professor channels experiences and impressions of the natural environment through paint. “My work is often generated out of a distant memory of a physical setting that becomes a metaphor for a personal truth,” he says. As meditations on both wild spaces and psyche, his paintings are doubly haunted. “It is clear that I am trying to hold/reflect the lost moment,” Moss says, “break through the fence of time and reclaim what was given to me as a child on a first-time basis.”
