The Underground — Recording Studio — Located in Randolph, the Underground has been one of Vermont's almost-hidden gems since owner and operator Vincent Freeman launched the project in 2018. Initially set in a 600-square-foot basement, the studio grew in 2021 and added a listening venue, hosting live music weekly for the past several years.
Live shows are currently on hold as Freeman and his partner are expecting a child. The studio, however, is going strong, producing and mixing records from local artists like Saints & Liars, Bow Thayer, Drowningman, and Sarah King, as well as touring artists such as Brooklyn post-punk act Cancel Vulture. Freeman brings his background in the DIY punk basement scene to his studio, which is now big enough to record full bands yet intimate enough to be a cozy spot for singer-songwriters.
Even as bigger and glitzier recording studios spread through Vermont, that appeal keeps musicians coming back to the Underground.
