Town Hall Theater — Sometimes, the difference between a good show and a great one is its setting. Middlebury's Town Hall Theater, on the dignified summit of South Pleasant Street, elevates all manner of performances with its full stage and state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems. Audiences can count on sinking into one of the 350 red theater seats in its main auditorium and being transported by talented touring artists and local groups, such as Middlebury Acting Company and Opera Company of Middlebury.

But the theater hasn't let itself get nearly as comfortable as those appealing red chairs. The 1884 building, which last received a major upgrade in 2008, raised the curtain this year on a 9,000-square-foot, $8.5 million wing, an ambitious expansion project that began in December 2023. The wing's flexible spaces, which include an outdoor courtyard with a stage, more than double the theater's previous size.

Town Hall Theater's amplified capacity for performances, events and educational programming is something to celebrate — and the community did just that at a grand opening party in June. Let's give 'em all a round of applause!
