The Vermont Department of Health reported on Tuesday another coronavirus-related death and 37 more confirmed cases of the disease.

The new infections were the most reported in a single day since Vermont's first case was discovered more than three weeks ago. A total of 293 people have now tested positive for the disease. Thirteen have died.

The new death marked the third coronavirus-related fatality involving an Essex Junction senior living community, Pinecrest at Essex, according to a health department spokesperson. Another patient and an employee's significant other have also died.

Tuesday's spike in cases comes four days after Health Commissioner Mark Levine announced that the state would expand its testing protocol to cover people with mild symptoms following an increase in the number of kits available in the state.
On Monday, Gov. Phil Scott ordered new arrivals to the state to self-quarantine for 14 days. He also shut down online bookings for vacation rentals and hotels. He said he hoped the measures would help slow the spread of the virus and prevent patients from overwhelming Vermont health care facilities.

The health department data released on Tuesday also included the number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations. Some 21 patients are confirmed to have the virus, while another 52 are hospitalized and "under investigation" for COVID-19.
