Reuben Jackson, host of "Friday Night Jazz" on Vermont Public Radio, announced Tuesday via Facebook that he is leaving the show in April. He has helmed the popular weekly jazz program since 2012 when he replaced George Thomas. Thomas had hosted "Jazz with George Thomas" on VPR for over a decade.

Vermont will be taking no part in mumblecore™ — at least not according to ClickHole. Yesterday, the Onion's delightfully irreverent content platform posted the piece, "Supporting the Arts: Vermont Is Offering a Tax Credit to Incentivize Indie Filmmakers to Stay the Fuck Out of Its State With That Bootleg Duplass-Brothers-Rip-Off Bullshit."

The title pretty much lays it all out, but it's a great full read anyway, especially if you get thrills every time you see the word "Vermont" in a major outlet, real or otherwise.

Tinotenda Charles Rutanhira

When Tinotenda Charles Rutanhira arrived in Vermont in 2000, he had $100 in his pocket. His first apartment in Burlington, he recalled, was so rickety, if you rolled a ball on the floor, you wouldn't know which way it would go. Rutanhira held multiple jobs, including as a waiter, dishwasher, cashier at a deli and daycare giver, to make ends meet.

Fast forward 17 years. Rutanhira is now a solutions strategist at Dealer.com and he's performing in the play The Call, at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in mid-April. The acting gig was borne out of his determination to do something that scares him each year. And it comes on the heels of an idea the Zimbabwean native finally put into action last October: making his own podcast.

Last March, Frog Hollow Vermont Craft Gallery partnered with Vermont PBS' "Made Here" program to spotlight some of the state's star craftspeople in The Frog Hollow Green Mountain Artisans. On Tuesday, February 7, at 7 p.m., PBS will re-air this pilot episode, which was directed by local photographer and filmmaker Natalie Stultz.

It features Enosburg Falls bowl turner Alan Stirt, Burlington sculptor Kate Pond, Granville glassblower Michael Egan and Bennington jeweler Ivy Long. Three new half-hour episodes will air each Tuesday for the rest of month.

On a website called Chivomengro, a group of Champlain College students  publishes essays, cultural reviews, something  kind of like news, and original art. The tagline for the site calls it "a nonfiction semi-literary entity devoted to pasta and angst." The "about us" section says it's a "purveyor of collegiate whatever."  Despite those waggish descriptions, the site has existed since 2012, is evolving and has become more organized. But it's still angsty, and often hilarious.

Chivomengro's latest edition includes a review of Bon Iver's new album, a piece by Walter Proulx called "Fucking Space" (did you know NASA is apparently working on a way to travel faster than the speed of light?), and site manager Peter Moore's reflective essay on the indescribable nature of certain experiences. Like their writers, the pieces are a little awkward and a lot endearing. And they're smart.

Gloria Steinem recently opined that young women favor Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in Democratic presidential primaries not because they identify more with his progressive politics or find his grouchy fire inspiring, but because, well, they're looking for dudes.

"When you're young, you're thinking, Where are the boys? The boys are with Bernie," she said on the HBO show "Real Time with Bill Maher."

The feminist icon's remarks were widely criticized as being patronizing to young liberal women. But is it possible she was onto something?

Nope, not at all. Steinem's comments were ill-advised and insulting — not to mention heteronormative — by any measure. But a new dating website, BernieSingles.com, does suggest that maybe Bernie-boosters are indeed looking for love in addition to social justice, income equality and political revolution.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) won the New Hampshire primary in convincing fashion earlier this week — superdelegates be damned. But ol' Bernardo didn't hog the media love for himself. In share-the-wealth fashion befitting a democratic socialist, he shared the national and local media spotlight with a number of Vermonters in the wake of the primary.  

Here's a quick roundup of those getting some shine this week.

Vermont musicians were featured prominently at Sanders events, official and otherwise, in New Hampshire, most notably Kat Wright and Brett Hughes and Dwight & Nicole. A picture of Hughes and Wright made the print and digital editions of the Washington Post. And Wright, Hughes and Dwight Ritcher — aka the "Bernie Sanders Singers" — were the subject of the short New York Times video below.

'Rumble Strip Vermont' podcast producer Erica Heilman

The Atlantic magazine has released its list of the top 50 podcast episodes of 2015, and "Rumble Strip Vermont," which we profiled back in May, has two entrants.

East Calais resident Erica Heilman launched "Rumble Strip" nearly three years ago. The podcast focuses on Vermonters whose lives play out beyond the gaze of traditional media, and episodes eschew the polished veneer and traditional narrative structure common to public radio.

The Atlantic chose two episodes of "Rumble Strip" for its list. "I Am in Here," features Colchester resident Mark Utter, who suffers from nonverbal autism and communicates with supported computer typing; and "An American Life," features St. Johsbury barber Vaughan Hood discussing his experiences in the Vietnam War.

Team WBTV-LP producing its Radio Race entry

It’s no big surprise that Llu Mulvaney-Stanak is so passionate about the expressive and communicative powers of radio. When she and her twin sister were infants, their mother would bring them with her into the offices of Goddard College’s radio station WGDR. “She took us in a basket and set us underneath the radio console while she would do her radio shows there,” says Mulvaney-Stanak.

Those radio waves must have had a strong impact, as Mulvaney-Stanak has made a career in sound. As DJ Llu, she’s been spinning tunes for more than 15 years at nightspots all over Burlington. She hosts a weekly show on the University of Vermont’s radio station, WRUV (and used to host Seven Days’ podcast “Tour Date with DJ Llu”). And she’s the development and outreach coordinator for VCAM, Burlington’s community media-making organization, where she’s involved with audio and video projects of all kinds. But, she says, “My first love is, first and foremost, radio.”

Already a fixture on Soundcloud, Mulvaney-Stanak and a small group of like-minded radio enthusiasts have used that website to share a short audio piece that seems like it could be a transmission from the future of radio. Team WBTV-LP (see below for that acronym’s significance) — which consists of Mulvaney-Stanak, Rob Henkel and Tiffany Lee — has created a radio piece titled “Tattoo a Unicorn on Your Forehead” as their entry into an online radio competition called the Radio Race. You can hear their entry below.
