As the world continues to mourn the passing of David Bowie, who died from cancer on Monday morning at age 69, local tributes to the pop icon are beginning to crop up. This includes a vigil at Burlington's Radio Bean this Saturday, January 16, called Ziggy's Dust: Awake for David Bowie. Here's the pertinent info, direct from the Bean's Lee Anderson:

Anderson says several local artists have signed to perform Bowie tunes and other tributes, though specific details are still being hashed out. The late-afternoon wake is open to the public, and anyone with a song or story or poem to share is welcome to do so. The obsequies will conclude with a "funeral parade finale," which, knowing the Bean, promises to be fittingly fabulous.

In other local Bowie news, BTV surf band Barbacoa are slated to host their own homage to the Thin White Duke at the Bean next Friday, January 22. Look for more details on that in next week's Soundbites column.

Finally, local pop phenoms Madaila have recorded an impromptu cover of Bowie's "Starman," from the classic 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Here's Madaila's Jer Coons on how the song came together:

We originally had a Madaila session scheduled yesterday, but when we got into the studio and heard about David Bowie, we abandoned it to record this. It felt like the only proper way to process the loss of such a cultural icon. We spent 14 hours straight putting it together. It turned into a wonderfully cathartic and inspiring marathon day. Willoughby [Morse] one-taked the outrageous guitar solo as I frantically copy & pasted the outro repeatedly so as to capture the magic and not cut the moment short. I don't really have the words for everything he meant to us as a band or the world at large. I'll leave that to more literate scribes. All I know is that we sure as hell wouldn't be wearing neon spandex if it weren't for him.
